Julian Assange Freed from Prison

Espionage Charges Dropped

Sentenced to Time Served, Returns to Australia

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been freed from prison in the United Kingdom and is expected to travel home to Australia after he pleaded guilty to a single felony count of illegally obtaining and disseminating classified information.

Assange's guilty plea brought to an end a 14-year legal battle that included his arrest in 2010, extradition to the UK in 2019, and a lengthy trial. In exchange for his guilty plea, US prosecutors agreed to drop espionage charges against him.

Assange, 51, served nearly three years in prison in the UK before being released on bail last month. He will now be able to return home to Australia, where he faces no criminal charges.

The conclusion of Assange's case has sparked mixed reactions. Some have hailed it as a victory for freedom of the press, while others have condemned Assange's actions as a threat to national security.
